Winners of the 8th Singapore Cyber Conquest Competition Announced

Winners of the 8th Singapore Cyber Conquest competition were announced today after close to eight hours of competition. Organised by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) with main sponsor StarHub, the competition was designed to challenge the cybersecurity capabilities of students from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in a near real-world cyber range.

The winning team, NUS Greyhats, will head to the Blackhat USA 2018 conference held in Las Vegas, USA next year.

The competition saw 26 teams from various IHLs in a race against time to complete specifically designed multi-level cybersecurity challenges. Players had to accumulate as many points as possible by completing tasks and obtaining values known as “flags” in challenges on several cybersecurity disciplines such as web security, reverse engineering and cryptography.

After an intense showing, the winners of 8th Singapore Cyber Conquest had emerged.

• 1st place: Team NUS Greyhats consisting of Nikolas Tay Zhihao and Jeremy Heng Wen Ming from National University of Singapore, will receive Blackhat USA 2018 Conference passes, inclusive of airfare and accommodation.

• 2nd place: Team NUS Grayhats consisting of Thng Kai Yuan and Liu Xinan from National University of Singapore, will each receive a $1000 Challenger voucher.

• 3rd place: Team Hotel Alfa Charlie Kilo consisting of Devesh Logendran and Wan Si Zheng from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, will each receive a $400 Challenger voucher.

The players commented that there was a greater variety of challenges and a deeper level of problem solving needed this year. The challenges not only tested participants on their familiarity with tools but also their understanding of the concepts behind the problems.
