Crimewatch: Cybercrime Cases

Cybercrime continues to be on the rise in Singapore, with 5,430 cases reported in 2017, according to the Singapore Police Force. Between 2016 and 2017, the percentage of cybercrime cases grew from 15.6% to 16.6% of total crimes, even as overall crime numbers fell.

CSA collaborated with the Singapore Police Force and the National Crime Prevention Council to re-enact cybercrime cases in the following Crimewatch episodes.

Crimewatch 2018 Episode 8 – Dark Web 
Know of family members and friends still using weak passwords or other unsafe cybersecurity practices? Beware, they are making it easier for hackers to access their accounts. In this Crimewatch episode, a cyber criminal bought PayPal log-in credentials and credit/debit card details from the Dark Web, and used these details to gain access to victims’ accounts to make unauthorised purchases. Watch the episode to find out just how the Police cracked down on his modus operandi, and made Singapore’s very first Dark Web-related conviction.

Crimewatch 2016 Episode 10 – Computer Hacking and Illegal Online Purchases

Passwords are the key to your digital life. If your passwords fall into the wrong hands, the consequences of losing your online accounts, important personal information and finances could be dire, especially if you use the same password across multiple accounts. In this episode, a group of individuals hacked into the websites of businesses that are poorly-secured and maintained, to retrieve the businesses’ databases comprising victims’ IDs and passwords. Watch how officers from the Technology Crime Investigation Branch tracked down the culprits and put a stop to their illegal shopping spree, which used victims’ e-commerce accounts. Learn more on how you can protect yourself and your businesses, and avoid falling victim to such cyber criminals.

Crimewatch 2016 Episode 5 - Cyber Terror
Cyber criminals today are coming up with more ways to cheat unsuspecting members of the public. Watch how a young man ended up as a money mule for a crime syndicate after applying for a fake job online. Lured by easy money, he allowed the syndicate to use his bank account to receive monies from victims whose accounts were compromised by banking malware. In the following story, a business owner fell victim to ransomware after clicking on a dubious link. Learn how you can protect yourself and your business from malware and ransomware attacks.

Crimewatch 2015 Episode 10 – 2013 Singapore Cyber-Attacks
In 2013, Singapore encountered a series of cyber-attacks allegedly committed by the hacktivist organisation "Anonymous". A member known by the online handle, "The Messiah" claimed responsibility for the attacks. Watch how the officers from the Police Technology Crime Investigation Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department cracked this series of hacking and arrested the mastermind behind these cyber-attacks.

Crimewatch 2015 Episode 8 – Love Scam
